Juventus, Serie A champions, announced on Friday that their sporting director, Fabio Paratici, is undergoing a criminal investigation for his alleged role in trying to speed up the pace of Uruguay striker Luis Suarez’s acquisition of Italian nationality.

Suarez, whom Juventus had hoped to sign from Barcelona, and who is married to a woman of Italian descent, passed a language test in September at the University of Foreigners in Perugia, as part of the procedures required to obtain Italian nationality before a possible transfer deal to Juventus.

This was a quick way to obtain nationality, enabling Juventus to sign the Uruguay striker without exceeding the quota for non-European Union players. But doubts were soon raised in the media that Suarez was getting privileged treatment.

Juventus has denied any wrongdoing and expressed confidence that the investigations will exonerate his sporting director.
