The governor of the province of Buenos Aires announced that the Unico de La Plata stadium, where Diego Armando Maradona held his last coaching position before his death, will take the Argentine football legend’s name.
During a meeting with Argentine President Alberto Fernández and Vice-President Cristina Kirchner, the governor affirmed that 3Diego was unique and deserved it ”.
“We have decided to rename this enclosure the Unico de la Plata to Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. Diego was unique, and he deserves this unique stadium to bear his name, ”he said.
Note that the Unico stadium, one of the most modern in Argentina, will host four Copa América matches next July.
Another stadium in Buenos Aires already bears Maradona’s name, that of the Argentinos Juniors club, where he started his career at the age of 15 before joining the Boca Juniors team after five years.
The San Paolo stadium in Naples, where Maradona played between 1984 and 1991, was also renamed after the Argentine legend.
As a reminder, Diego Armando Maradona died on November 25 at the age of 60 from a cardiopulmonary arrest. He had been successfully operated on for a blood clot in his brain earlier this month and then needed alcohol dependence treatment.
