Signal has found a great alternative to WhatsApp, which has caused a lot of controversy over the past few days after updating its privacy policy.

WhatsApp, owned by Facebook, imposed the sharing of data with other Facebook applications and products, and if users do not accept the terms of the new privacy policy, their WhatsApp account will be deleted as of February 8, 2021. Therefore, the search for better alternatives that preserve users’ privacy began.

It is reported that after this update, Elon Musk – the CEO of Tesla and the richest person on earth today – urged his followers on Twitter to use the application Signal and was joined by Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter.

It’s also the messaging app that Edward Snowden – a famous privacy advocate and former National Security Agency employee – has been recommending for years. But why is Signal the best alternative to WhatsApp now?

I- What is Signal:

A signal can do everything WhatsApp does, as you can activate it using your phone number, and then via your phone’s Internet connection, you can send encrypted text messages, voice messages, pictures, or videos to individuals and groups as well. It also allows you to make individual or group audio and video calls with encryption support in both.

II- What are the reasons why Signal is the best alternative to WhatsApp?:

1- Signal is an open source application that supports encryption:

The signal is considered the best alternative to WhatsApp because it is the most secure application among all other messaging applications, as it is an open-source application and is owned by Open Whisper Systems, a non-profit organization whose goal is to make private communications accessible to everyone.

The signal application supports encryption features and works on almost all operating systems; it is available for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is also effortless to use and provides audio and video calls, so you will not miss anything WhatsApp offers you.

The application supports the (end-to-end encryption) feature to secure your conversations so that no one and the company developing the application itself can read your messages or listen to your calls. The encryption feature is based on an open-source encryption protocol called (Signal Protocol), which means that experts can test it and search for errors. Simultaneously, this is not available in the WhatsApp application, which makes the application Signal more secure.

Signal also allows you to create encrypted groups so that you can have secure private conversations with all of your friends simultaneously.

2- Signal does not collect your personal data:

The app raises the banner. Protecting privacy is not an optional mode, but the basis for our work, along with all the features you expect in the messaging app you want to use.

This has been proven; A comparison made by Forbes magazine between the famous instant messaging applications, namely: Signal, iMessage, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger, using the new app privacy stickers feature that Apple launched the App Store.

This comparison has shown that the application Signal is the best application in terms of preserving privacy because all the personal data that it accesses is your phone number, and it does not try to link it to your identity.

While the WhatsApp application, WhatsApp collects a lot of account-related data such as phone number, your account picture, and your usage patterns – which include: the features you use, the groups you joined, how you interact with others within the application, and other information such as the use of the status feature – and data Device, and more. In addition to all that; After updating the privacy policy, the application will share all this data with other Facebook applications.

You can see all the data that the application collects about you through the article: “What data does WhatsApp collect about you, and how do you enhance your privacy?”

3- Signal allows backups to be saved and encrypted on your device:

The Signal application allows you to store a backup copy of your messages, pictures, files, and other content locally on your device in a folder in the Files application, not in a cloud storage service or Google Drive service WhatsApp works.

When you activate the backup feature in the application, your data is encrypted with a 30-digit passcode, and you will need this code to restore the backup, so you must keep it in a safe place.

You won’t be able to restore a backup without the 30-digit passcode, so think of it as a security key that cannot be duplicated, where a new backup must be created to create a new passcode.

4- You will not be added to Signal groups without your permission:

One of the most important privacy features in the Signal application is that not all group members will be added automatically. Still, an invitation will be sent to people, and they must accept the invitation first to join the group.
