Several smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola, have introduced smartphones with flexible displays in recent years. So far, such devices are quite expensive and are intended only for a narrow circle of buyers. According to Bloomberg, Apple may be able to increase the popularity of such smartphones, which is working on creating an iPhone with a flexible display.

According to the agency, such an iPhone will not hit the market in the coming years – while Apple engineers are working on prototypes of a flexible display for the smartphone. The display with the most invisible hinge mechanism is supposed to fold the device up to the size of the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

As noted by The Verge, Apple has not yet publicly admitted that it is exploring technologies for creating flexible displays, but the Cupertino-based company usually does not advertise its plans until the presentation of new devices.

As for Apple’s plans for 2021, the company will presumably introduce the next generation of iPhone smartphones, and these devices will receive minor changes compared to the models presented in the fall of 2020.

The only significant innovation could be a fingerprint scanner built into the device screen. Such scanners are already used in smartphones by many companies. Apple, which previously ditched the Touch ID sensor in favor of Face ID facial recognition technology, may return the scanner to iPhones due to the coronavirus pandemic, which forces people to wear masks, making Face ID difficult.

Finally, according to Bloomberg, Apple is considering releasing versions of the iPhone without a Lightning port – such devices can only be charged using the wireless charging technology that appeared in Apple smartphones last year.

Recall that in November last year, the Chinese company Lenovo began selling the ThinkPad X1 Fold hybrid laptop with a flexible screen, which became the first mass-produced device of its kind. Its cost ranges from $ 2499 to $ 3099.
