Barcelona’s young star Ansu Fati has been called up to the Spanish national team for the first time in order to face Germany and Ukraine next month in the second edition of the European Nations League, according to the squad announced Thursday by returning coach Luis Enrique.
Ansu Fati joined the Spanish national team while he was over seventeen years old after he emerged this season in Barcelona by scoring 8 goals in 33 matches he played in all competitions.
Ansu Fati, born in Guinea-Bissau, acquired Spanish citizenship on September 20, 2019.
Ansu Fati was not the only new face in the first line-up for Enrique since his return to coach the national team last November, but also included Sergio Regilon (Sevilla), Eric Garcia (Manchester City), Mikel Merino (Real Sociedad), Oscar Rodriguez (Leganes). Adama Traore (Wolverhampton) and Ferran Torres (Valencia).
In exchange for these new faces, players who used to be in the company of the 2008, 2012 and 2010 World Cups, such as Jordi Alba (Barcelona) or Saul Niguel (Atlético Madrid) were absent from the squad.
It is Enrique’s first squad for 18 months (the last dates back to March 15, 2019) because he moved away from the national team to stay with his daughter Channy, who died in August at the age of nine after her struggle with bone cancer.
