Barcelona postpones renewal of Ter Stegen and is about to include a new goalkeeper

Barcelona has suspended talks to extend the contract with German goalkeeper Mark Andre Ter Stegen and is about to hire a new goalkeeper to strengthen the team for next season.

Sport reported on Sunday that Barcelona would rather wait to see the financial implications of the coronavirus crisis before submitting a final offer to extend the 27-year-old German guard’s contract.

The newspaper said Ter Stegen’s relationship with the club – which he had moved in 2014 from Borussia Monchengladbach – and his colleagues was “excellent”.

The newspaper wrote: “There is still a desire to reach an agreement” with the guard regarding the renewal of the current contract, which runs until 2022, noting that Gerd Fum Bruch, manager business of Ter Stegen, expressed his full understanding of cutting negotiations, but said the decision was not without risk as several major European clubs have expressed interest in the German goalkeeper, including Juventus and Manchester City.

On the other hand, the Catalan club has closer to signing with the Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana, goalkeeper of Ajax Amsterdam.

According to the Catalan newspaper “Sport”, Barcelona prefers to sign Onana – who is brilliant with Ajax – especially because he is one of the young people of the famous club academy “La Masia”, and the player, who has 24 years, and whose contract with Ajax ends in the summer of 2022, has great experience with the Dutch club in recent times.

Sport has confirmed that Barcelona controls the agreement with Onana, despite the interest of more than one club to obtain its services, in particular Paris Saint-Germain. Onana received many offers last summer but chose to stay in Ajax with the guarantee that he would be allowed to leave in the summer of 2020 if he wanted to.

According to the newspaper, Barcelona will not accept any official moves with Onana before Neto leaves, and if the Brazilian goalkeeper stays, there will be no reason to include a new goalkeeper.

Ajax must receive 40 million euros for the sale of Onana, a figure that Barcelona considers too important for a goalkeeper who will replace Ter Stegen.
