A video of the British Consul General in Chongqing, China, Stephen Ellison, was very popular on Saturday, after he rescued a 24-year-old girl after she fell into a river, in what Chinese activists considered a hero.

According to the British newspaper “The Guardian”, Stephen Ellison – 61 – was walking by a river in a nearby village when the girl slid from rocks into deep water.

Videos posted on social media and official media showed Stephen Ellison taking off his shoes and jumping in the water, fully clothed.

Ellison was visiting Chung Shan on Saturday when he heard shouts from a crowd gathered near the river, according to a statement published by the British Embassy in China on WeChat.

Ellison said in an interview with the BBC that the girl recovered quickly and invited him to eat together.

“Because of her rescue at the right time, the young woman quickly regained consciousness,” said a post on the official consulate page on the Weibo app.

“We are all very proud of our Consul General in Chongqing,” the British diplomatic mission in China wrote on Twitter.

The video became very popular, and received millions of views on the Weibo microblogging site and other social networking sites.
