Lionel Messi’s current contract in Barcelona expires in the summer of 2021 and a two-year contract extension is said to have been offered, with his new deal set to expire in 2023.
According to Mundo Deportivo, “the player’s salary will not improve”, the coronavirus pandemic playing a devastating role in the finances of football clubs across Europe.
The player’s father, Jorge, had discussions with Barça president Josep Maria Bartomeu. And it is reported that “both parties agree to the main terms of the contract”. It will be a new two-year agreement with Messi having the possibility at the end of each season to extend it beyond.
From there, the agreement contains an open clause, allowing for 12-month increases, based on an agreement between Messi and Barcelona nearing the end of his career like the old contract.
The talks are rumored to be progressing well, with all parties satisfied with what is currently on offer, including an agreement to keep his current salary at the same pace.
Barcelona has not announced a date for this renewal, but they want a new deal to be agreed before the start of the 2020-21 season.
