“The Best” will not take place this year. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, FIFA has decided to cancel the awards ceremony this year.

Originally scheduled for Milan on September 21, “The Best” will have to be postponed until next year. However, FIFA has yet to announce a new date.

“Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and its consequences, the ceremony will not take place and various alternatives are being considered by FIFA,” said a spokesman for the body.

Canceling the ceremony in 2020 seems logical since no football match has been played in the past two months with an uncertain future because the vaccine to cure the virus has not yet been found.

At the same time, Milan and the Lombardy region were the epicenter of the Italian coronavirus outbreak, one of the worst in Europe in terms of death and infections.

In 2019, Lionel Messi beat Cristiano Ronaldo and Virgil Van Dijk to win the FIFA Player of the Year title for the sixth time while American striker Megan Rapinoe won the Women’s Player of the Year award. FIFA at the previous ceremony.
