US auto giant General Motors (GM) will unveil the first fully electric vehicle in its high-end Cadillac division on Thursday.

The Lyric, a sport utility vehicle (SUV) with a low profile like a station wagon, will be equipped with a new type of battery that GM has dubbed Ultium. It offers, according to the manufacturer, greater flexibility in layout and will cost less to produce due to lower use of cobalt.

“The stakes are high because GM places Cadillac at the forefront of its growing push towards electric vehicles,” said the American news site Axios.

This is indeed Cadillac’s first foray, once at the top of the luxury segment before competing with other brands, into fully electric models.

GM released a few images of the new model last week that hint at a very futuristic design. The Detroit-based automaker hopes to compete with electric vehicles from world leader Tesla and other premium brands like Jaguar and Audi.
