Erling Haaland wins “Golden Boy” award

The Italian sports newspaper “Toto Sport” has chosen Erling Haaland, the striker of the German football club Borussia Dortmund, to win the “Golden Boy” award as the best player in Europe under the age of 21 in 2020.

The 20-year-old Norwegian player was ahead of his rival, Anso Fati, the Barcelona soccer player, who came in second place, and Alfonso Davis of Bayern Munich, followed by Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho.

The newspaper wrote: The boy from the ice and bays of Norway left everyone behind, and deservedly won the 2020 Golden Boy Award.

The newspaper has been awarded this prize since 2013, and journalists from all over Europe vote.

For his part, the club wrote on Twitter: Haaland won the award for the best junior player under 21 awarded by Tuttosport; congratulations, Erling.

It should be noted that Haaland is the first Norwegian and the first Scandinavian to win the award; he is the third player from the German League to win it, after Mario Gotze in 2011 and Renato Sanchez in 2016. Portugal’s Joao Flex won this award last year.

Michael Zork, the sporting director of German football club Borussia Dortmund, had previously described Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski as a “perfect striker”, but Dortmund striker Erling Haaland was better than Lewandowski when he was his age.
