The Swiss surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo (2) and Lionel Messi, (3) who have always been at the top of the ranking in three of the last four years.
Ronaldo ($ 105 million), Messi ($ 104 million), Neymar ($ 95.5 million) and LeBron James ($ 88.2 million) complete the top 5 highest incomes.
“The coronavirus pandemic has triggered pay cuts for soccer stars Messi and Ronaldo, paving the way for a tennis player to rank as the highest-paid athlete in the world for the first time,” said Kurt Badenhausen, editor in chief of Forbes.
The highest-ranked female athlete is 29th place Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka ($ 37.4 million), who replaced Serena Williams ($ 36 million) in 33rd place.
