The Spanish football championship, suspended since mid-March due to the new coronavirus, will restart the week of June 08, announced the President of the Spanish government, Pedro Sanchez, on Saturday.
“I would like to inform you that with the Higher Council for Sport, we have agreed to the resumption of La Liga the week of June 08,” said the Spanish executive chief at a press conference.
“Spanish football is very popular, but it will not be the only recreational activity that we will recover,” he insisted.
“Spain has done what it had to do and now new horizons are open to everyone. The time has come to rediscover a large part of daily activities. From June 08 we will resume the matches of the football championship, “noted Mr. Sanchez.
Javier Tebas, president of LaLiga, the body which manages the affairs of professional football in Spain, had expressed his wish to resume the championship on June 12.
“I would like it to be June 12, it will depend on what happens,” Tebas said in statements to Movistar television, ruling out any cancellation of the season in the men’s first division.
The competitions will resume “when the Minister of Health says,” added the boss of LaLiga, adding that the match schedule would be very intensive with two games a week.
