Argentinian magician Lionel Messi led his Barcelona team to regain first place in the Spanish football league, after scoring the Catalan team’s only goal in their victory over their guest Granada on Sunday in the 20 weeks competition.
Barcelona’s balance – which played its first match under the direction of its new trainer Kiki Sittin Sunday – reached 43 points in the head, by a difference of two goals in front of its closest rivals and its traditional rivals Real Madrid, with the same number of points.
On the other hand, Grenada’s balance, which suffered its ninth defeat in the competition this season, and the third in its last four matches of the tournament, stood at 27 points in tenth place.
Although Barça scored three points, he was affected by the absence of his Uruguayan superstar Luis Suarez, who has undergone a knee operation which will keep him out of the stadiums, perhaps until the end of the season, according to several reports.
The French Antoine Griezmann and the young player Enso Fati could not compensate for the absence of Suarez in the match, given the good defensive positioning of Granada, who had to play with ten men after his player Jerman Sanchez was expelled at the 69th minute following his receipt of second warning in the match.
With this victory, Barcelona avenged their 2-0 defeat against Granada in the first leg of the competition, which took place at the Andalusian stadium last September.
As usual, Messi was chosen as Man of the match after scoring the hosts’ only goal in the 76 minutes.
Messi has increased his goal balance this season to 14 goals to strengthen his lead to the competition’s top scorer, with a difference of two goals from Frenchman Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema.
