Following the unprecedented demand for video calls during the period of confinement linked to the coronavirus pandemic, the instant messenger WhatsApp (belonging to the social network Facebook) has increased the maximum number of participants in video calls from four to eight users.

Currently, users of iOS devices who have installed the latest version of WhatsApp from the AppStore can use the calling function with other updated participant usage (all participants in the conversation must install it). The updated version of WhatsApp for Android is not yet available on Google Play, but the application can be downloaded directly from the WhatsApp website.

You can start a group call directly from the chat, which contains all participants in the conversation, or call one of them, then add the rest of the parties. The WhatsApp website points out that video calls are protected by end-to-end encryption.

Recall that the coronavirus pandemic has caused a sharp increase in the popularity of video call services. Thus, the daily audience of the Zoom service, despite its security problems, has multiplied by 20 times and has exceeded 200 million users, so that 100 people can participate in videoconferencing in the free version of Zoom.

Other services have also extended the functionality of video calls. For example, Facebook launched the Messenger desktop application “Rooms” and then increased the maximum number of participants in video calls via Messenger to 50 people. In addition, the famous Skype video app supports the same limit.
