Zurich meeting athletics wants to test distance competition

The meeting in Zurich, canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, announced Tuesday the organization on July 9 of the “Weltklasse Inspiration Games”, remote duels which will bring together 30 athletes competing in eight disciplines from seven stadiums.

Several big stars of world athletics, including Allyson Felix, Noah Lyles, Christian Taylor, Dalilah Muhammad, Shaunae Miller-Uibo, Ekaterini Stefanidi, Andre De Grasse, Omar McLeod, Jimmy Vicaut, will participate in this unique event.

The meeting in Zurich, which was originally scheduled to host the Diamond League finals in September, thus succeeded in attracting big names who will compete remotely in their country of residence (seven stadiums, including the Letzigrund in Zurich, are planned).

Three teams (United States, Europe and Rest of the world) will compete in eight events (four women, four men), one athlete per team and per event.

The organizers are announcing a 90-minute televised show, with classic events (pole, triple jump), or other little contested (100 yards, 91.44 m, 300 m hurdles …).

The international athletics season, cut off from the Olympic Games (postponed) and the Paris Euro (canceled), should not start at best until mid-August in Monaco due to the coronavirus pandemic. In the meantime, initiatives are flourishing to offer competitions to athletes with in particular distance events or the resumption of national meetings in certain countries where health measures allow (Czech Republic, Switzerland, etc.).
